Welcome to our Desktop Publishing Page. The term Desktop Publishing could really encompass all of the programs used for producing digital artwork on the computer. On this page however we will concentrate on those programs that specialize in the final assembly of graphic elements into one finished product. That could be a brochure, a pamphlet , a book of many hundreds of pages in fact any finished artwork ready to send to the printer.
Have a look at the Images below and then visit one of the program links for information, tips and training on each of the Desktop Publishing programs discussed on this page. Any one of the Three programs linked on the left could produce the artworks shown below.

If you are a beginner you must read the Essential Background Pages first.

The Do's and Don'ts of preparing artwork for Offset Printing.

If you haven't already been there visit the Offset Printing page to understand how it works.
When you believe that you are ready to produce artwork, find a printer first and ask how they would like the artwork presented. The PDF file format is the preferred standard in the Industry, but if you are a beginner the printer may prefer you to give him a file from the program you created the artwork in. For instance he may ask you for an Indesign file packaged for the printer. This gives the printer more options and opportunities to edit or adjust any problems he might find in the output.
Before printing the printer will provide you with a 'proof' of the final print. It is up to you to check this thoroughly before going ahead with the final print.
Ask the printer for a tour of his print shop. There is nothing like actually seeing the print process in action to help you learn the potential problems that printers may face.
